”In 2014, Eeva published a paper in the Finnish journal Natura about ways in which she tries to engage students in humorous critiques of consumption and advertising. They examine, then cut up, rearrange and/or scribble on magazine adverts. They try to subvert their messages so that the information that they hide is made visible. What they produce are what’s called subvertisements. Here Eeva describes how she organises subvertisement workshops, and showcases some of the work that students have produced.”
In July geography professor Ian Cook shared a blog post about ’How to run a subvertisement workshop’. The post is my translation and an excerpt from my original article ”Clothes and Subvertisements” published in the Finnish teaching journal Natura. It has also been added to the Fashion Revolution Arts and Activism Library on Pinterest.
The article introduces commodity chain research, clothes production and culture jamming, which are useful tools for teaching trade justice. My aim in the article is to popularise research and to inspire, so the text is short and easy compared to scientific articles. On Cook’s blog the article is summarised but you can find a link to the translation of the whole article, too.
The followthethings.com website and its blog Follow The Blog are worth visiting: they include research, news stories and culture activism about commercial products. I have written several blog post for Follow The Blog. They can be found with the tag ’English’ on my blog.
Click here to see the blog post and photos about workshops. Enjoy!
* Eevan artikkelista tiivistelmä englanniksi Follow The Blog -blogissa *
Ian Cook julkaisi Follow The Blog -blogissaan englanninkielisen katkelman Natura-lehden artikkelistani, jossa esittelen tuotantoketjujen tutkimusta, vaatteiden tuotantoa ja kulttuurihäirinnän käyttämistä opetuksessa. Artikkelin olen jakanut blogissani ja Issuu:ssa. Artikkelin tavoitteena on tieteen yleistajuistaminen ja inspiroiminen, joten teksti on viisi sivua ja tiedeartikkeleita helpompaa luettavaa. Cookin blogissa teksti on tiivistetyssä muodossa, mutta siellä on linkki myös käännökseeni koko artikkelista.
Olen tehnyt kulttuurimaantieteen professori Cookille aiemminkin englanninkielisiä blogitekstejä, jotka löytyvät blogistani tagilla ’English’. Cookin ylläpitämät followthethings.com ja Follow The Blog ovat tutustumisen arvoisia: sivut sisältävät kulutustuotteiden tutkimusta, ajankohtaisia uutisjuttuja ja kulttuuriaktivismia helppolukuisella englannilla.
